Mangalore on my plate :)

Three years of college + 6 ‘foodie’ friends = many a eat outs explored :)

Here’s quite a handy guide to eating out in Mangalore.

Since we are talking about Mangalore, let’s start with Mangalorean specialties. And it is Ayodhya near PVS which provides the best ever Mangalorean and south Indian snacks. The place is very pocket friendly too. Best quality at the lowest of prices.

Hotel Krishna Bhavan near Janatha Bazaar is a great place for lunch. A place to go when you have only lunch in mind. Not a place to ‘hang out’. It’s sit-eat-leave system. But the food here is just lovely, feels good on stomach too.

Utsav in Kodialbail is a great place for North Indian food (Veg). They also have a Buffet lunch on the top floor. You get quite a huge spread for Rs.75 . Not recommended for someone with a light appetite: P

Cherry Square near SCS hospital is a cozy little place. Has both vegetarian and non vegetarian food. Great place to go with friends. The only place in Mangalore where I have ice creams, after Ideals or Pabbas. Very special assortments I must say, a must eat. Yummy ! :)

Chefs at Nanthoor and Urva

Heavenly burgers! These are not the typical burgers, like the ones you get in Mc. Donald’s. Go try them if you haven’t or you’ll be missing something really wonderful.

Hao Hao and Hao Ming in Balmatta

The best Chinese restaurants in Mangalore. Reasonable pricing too. There’s a good number of choices for vegetarians too, but non vegetarians have quite a treat in store. Am a vegetarian but my friends have had some very good times 

Taj Mahal- Really disappointed with the north Indian food here. Change plans and go to utsav for north Indian.

Janatha Deluxe- Nice place for a good old south Indian Thali. The thali in the AC section comes with a lot more varieties of side dishes. Well, the prices vary too 

Chutney- Vegetarian Restaurant at Hotel Deepa Comforts.

I haven’t been here many times. I really liked the south Indian thali here. North Indian was nothing special, you can get it at utsav for half the price.

Phalki at Jyothi

Food is good but overpriced since it’s a ‘posh’ restaurant.

Hotel Navrathna

Food was good but again not something suited for a student’s pocket.

There’s a new place called Sizzler’s Ranch near Canara school Urva, their speciality being sizzlers. I ve been there only once and I made the mistake of ordering north Indian khana, donno why, maybe there were no veg sizzlers? I don’t remember. Anyways it turned out to be a bad idea. Well, the place was packed with people so I guess the sizzler’s must be good.

Bon Bon’s – In Yeyyadi and a outlet in Balmatta.

This place, owned by a very friendly couple is the best place for pastries. I owe at least a few of my extra kilos to this place :P . Visit for pastries of the finest quality, all for Rs. 20 or lesser.

Ideals and Pabbas Icecreams.

I don’t think there’s any Mangalorean who hasn’t had ice creams here. They are simply the best. They also come packed, so you can have them at your nearest retail store too. I have never ever had such good ice creams.

Food Court, Empire Mall

I don’t think there’s anyone who has not been here. You get almost everything in there and you won’t be disappointed with the taste.

There are so many more great places for short eats. Visit Car Street in the evening for some yummy hot pakoras or charmuri :) Marwadi Sweets in Empire Mall is the place to go for tasty samosas and kachoris. The best lassi in Mangalore is also found here. Shreya and Arya sweets in Saibeen Complex and Jyothi respectively are a great place to get some real good pedas, burfis etc.

Ooph .. that was long … There are so many more places I would like to explore but sadly, there’s no time left  Will be moving to Bangalore very soon for my MCA. Will surely miss all these places!

I wanted to know about the fee structure for MCA in this particular college, so i thought of calling on the number mentioned on their website. How simple life is with technology :)

I gave a call, someone picked it up

me - hello, this is shwetha from mangalore, i would like to know about the fee structure for MCA.

The person at the other end gave me another number and said i would get the information there.

I called up this new number and the person there gave me the number to the MCA Department. Again i call. A lady picked up and asked me to call the admission section. huh Another number.

The person at the admission section connected me to another extension. A lady picked up and her voice was familiar. Well, it was again the lady from MCA department. She went- didn't i just ask you to call the admission block ? I told her my dukh bhari kahani and she had a laugh. Well, all i got from her was a laugh and yes, another number!! This one to the section which deals with management seats.

Well i wanted information regarding the government seats. Anyways i did call. And the lady there said, i don't have any information regarding the government seats, call the admission block. Arrrrhhh .... I had reached the saturation point.

And we say technology has made our life easy. Too much of it is too bad .. lolz

Those were the best days of my life :)

The day I wrote my entrance tests, (read screwed up: P) for engineering and medicine, I decided I would be doing my BCA. Not a tough decision to make, considering I live in the ‘era’ where every second youngster is studying to be an engineer and well, I live in Karnataka! Do I need any more reasons? Oh yes, I was truly interested too: P

That reminds me of a PJ …. Throw a banana peel in Bangalore, it will either fall on a dog or a software engineer, obviously :)

Hum .. I wanted to do my BCA in this particular college here at Mangalore, well known and most importantly has a huge campus! I got home the application and thought of submitting it after two days. What’s the hurry i thought (Very like me :)) Well, when I did go back after 2 days, the seats were all sold out. Yeah, I said sold out. They don’t give a damn about marks.

With that I went to SDM, which came 2nd in my list of preference and got my admission ticket. Sadly, it has real small campus. I was quite disappointed and regretted for not having made it sooner to the other college.

Before I knew it, it was time for college! I got to know that a girl living in my neighbourhood, an acquaintance, was going to be my classmate. Quite a relief, I would have some company on the first day of college.

Well, the day went great and there has been no regretting ever since! Days were pure bliss. Classmates were wonderful. Thanks to this college, I met 5 terrific people. Love you lots. Shruthi, sup, sowmi, Vidya, chaithra hope you are reading this. Well they almost never do: P

SDM college is simply the best! Memories are still so fresh. Traditional days, college days, fests and the class wise competitions which everyone was so passionate about… Even after a year, we attend all these functions, never miss them!

Now I realize why we don’t have a send off party for the final year students at SDM. Our principal used to say- U will always remain students of this college. You will never be sent off. It used to sound funny back then, doesn’t any more :)

In mood for some PJ's ????

25 th of July 2009 was a sad day for Michael Jackson fans. The 'king of pop' passed away at the age of 50 due to cardiac arrest.

He started performing at the age of five and went on to give some of the biggest hits ever. In recent times, he was more in news due to controversies than for his work. In fact, people were more interested in the person than in his work :) There might be people who haven’t heard his songs but not one who hasn’t heard his name :)

What struck me was the way fans reacted to the news of his death. They celebrated his life, some sang his songs, some others danced and others silently paid homage to their star ..

Lets go back in time to April 12th 2006 when legendary kannada cinema actor Dr. Rajkumar passed away at the age of 77 after a heart attack. What happened here was a breach of law and order in the name of homage. As news spread, the so called fans (true fans would never resort to such violence) started throwing stones at vehicles and buildings. Tyres were burnt on roads, blocking traffic and many BMTC buses and other vehicles were set on fire. Policemen were injured and several others were stabbed. Some even lost their lives-Meaningless anger, resulting in loss of life and property.

It's a shame we act so uncivilized. If people acted a little more thoughtful, India would be a lot better place to live in.

The Little Nuclear Powerhouse

The brand new season of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa little Champs is on ... I love this show, for the quality of it ... The class of singers on this stage is finer than in any other reality show, so i actually bear with all the TRP friendly stunts and follow the show religiously .

Well this year i found my champ right away in the very first episode ! Guess who ? Afsha Musani, the cute, bubbly, super smart 'chashmish' who co-hosts the show along with Dairya Sorecha of 'kya aap panchvi pass se tez ho' fame ..Just 5 yrs of age, i believe she is the youngest host on indian telivision ... [ The only thing i managed to achieve when i was 5 was ... well, is going to school called an achievement ??]

This little girl was spotted at the auditions of sa re ga ma pa ... Though she didn't make it into the competition for her singing, her witty remarks did get her an entry into the show as a host .... [Quick thinking, producer]

Her shrill voice, her laugh, ohhh .. just too cute ... She has already stolen everyone's hearts, for sure ... My parents just love her ...Dad adores her ... Mom showers blessings and says kahin nazar na lage .. Me, i just can't stop smiling :):)

She surely is the highlight of the show ... Cheers to you afsha . God bless :-)

[It's friday today ! yipee ! It's afsha time ! Don't miss it guys ]
